Why does the bride carry a bouquet?

15 March 2016

The tradition of bouquets has its origin in the days of old. Women carried aromatic bunches of garlic, herbs and spices to avert evil spirits.

The conventional Celtic bouquets included ivy, thistle and heather. The garland was not made of flowers but of strong-flavors herbs and spices. The strong- flavors were thought to have esoteric powers and meant to keep away evil spirits.

Until Queen Victoria married Prince Albert, the herbs and spices had been substituted by fresh flowers and nowadays the bride just pick the bouquets according to her preferences. People also believe that who catches the bouquet is said to follow the bride and be the next to get married.
